PIC minutes
May 25, 2005
9:30-11 a.m.
Attending: Dale Askey, Katie Bauer, Julie Linden (chair), Stephen Naron, Karen
Reardon, Earl Roy, Andy Shimp, Kalee Sprague, Tao Yang (recorder)
Absent: Debbie Falvey, Rick Zwies
1. Announcements
Julie announced Andy will leave PIC after a long service at PIC and its predecessors.
Debbie will finish her one-year PIC internship at the end of June; Julie has
asked Danuta and David Stern to post the availability of this internship to
the YUL staff. Julie will retire as the PIC chair but remains in PIC for another
two years; the new PIC chair is still up in the air. Tao will remain in the
PIC. (After the meeting, Rick announced he will leave Yale for California.)
Stephen and Karen will host the PIC table at the Communication Committee Fair.
Stephen will create a one-page handout for distribution at the fair. PIC internship
may also be mentioned at the fair.
As for the issue of frontdoor facelift, Julie has solicited the additional
required price quotes and is waiting for an OK from the library business office.
Karen said she has arranged for the blog webcast right after the next PIC meeting
(after the meeting, it turns out the webcast will actually takes place at noon,
due to the time zone difference). Shaundolyn will ask vendor (New Horizons)
to see if they can offer CSS workshop to the library web developers.
2. Revision of Databases & Article Searching page
Julie reported there has been no response to her YULPUB message asking for feedback
on the link to MetaLib from the Databases & Article Searching page. Medical
Library said they need more time to respond (the medical response was posted
one day after this meeting).
Katie is preparing a usability study on MetaLib interface and is recruiting
test subjects; other PIC members are willing to let her use their student assistants.
Julie asked PIC to devote some time in the next meeting to look at the MetaLib/DBOW
comparisons, especially in terms of user interfaces. PIC members who are in
the MetaLib implementation group (Dale, Kalee, and Katie) reported that the
MetaLib Implementation Group will retire and a larger MetaLib support group
will start.
Selected General Databases
Members discussed the list of selected general databases and decided no action
will be taken at this point because of the upcoming changes to the Databases
and Articles Searching page in light of the MetaLib implementation.
3. Combined search
PIC members reviewed the combined search page at Penn (http://www.library.upenn.edu/federated)
and the combined search page Karen created (http://resources.library.yale.edu/online/combineintro.asp)
Katie indicated she does not like the e-journal vs. print journal groupings.
Dale suggested using a Google search box instead of displaying the Google search
results, to save the real estate. There is a consensus that the display of Orbis
search results needs to be changed, and Karen and Kalee will work on that.
4. Ask Handsome Dan
Julie said SSLIS wants to brand its forthcoming FAQ service as "Ask Handsome
Dan." There is no objection to that.
