PIC Minutes
August 3, 2005
Out: Julie Linden, Kalee Sprague, Earl Roy
Attending: Tao Yang, Stephen Naron, Karen Reardon, Debbie Falvey (recording),
Katie Bauer, Andy Shimp.
Guest: Amanda Patrick
1. Announcements
Katie announced a trial of VITAL, a digital repository based on Fedora.
2. News and In Focus
Guest: Amanda Patrick, who will be charged with all external library communications,
including the News and In Focus off the Library's home page.
Amanda would like to see headline links under the News sections for Events,
Exhibits, and Publications.
Stephen suggested using tabs in the news section, but Karen felt we should
hold off until a future, bigger revamp.
It was agreed that, within the News section, the last bullet would say "more
news, events, exhibits & library publications". Each word or phrase
in that bullet will link to a page with information sections for each of these
topics.
"Library Publications" will consist of Nota Bene and the Library
Gazette. It was felt that Library Links, now accessible off the Staff front door,
should not be included in the link due to the personal nature of featured staff
articles.
The committee felt that In Focus should be used more for patron information
than as a PR tool, although it is understood that library's 75th anniversary
will be prominent in this section from October to May 2006.
In Focus will be coded to rotate but we want to have the capability to leave
it fixed for big items such as the 75th anniversary promotion. There are concerns
that it might be difficult to turn rotation of text on and off, and that we need
to be careful with the implementation so that staff could not accidentally hurt
the table layout of the Front Door
The 75th Anniversary logo prominence on the home page or as an image rotating
among In Focus images was debated. PIC doesn't feel that there is a place on
the home page for a permanent link & logo for the 75th celebration. Amanda
will work with the logo to see if it can be made quite small or perhaps only
use text to mark 75th anniversary items.
In Focus will be archived and wording for items in this section should be limited
to a set amount of words and will link elsewhere for more information. The exact
limit will be set when the new design for the Front Door is delivered and we
can see how much text will look appropriate in that space.
3. Front Door Facelift update (Karen Reardon)
Images are being coded. Coded page should be delivered on Monday August 8th.
After some tweaking by Bonnie Turner, WWDCS (Karen's group) and PIC will test
using different operating systems and browsers. The plan is to go live on August
15th.
4. Brief update on the reporting structure of PIC, new membership, etc.
(Katie Bauer)
PIC will no longer report to SQIC. As of August 15th, it will report to the Public
Services Council. Julie Linden will stay on but no longer as chair - a new chair
will be announced soon. Other membership changes are:
Andy Shimp will step down and Nisa Bakkalbasi will join PIC as the Science representative.
Lei Wang will replace Rick Zwies until Rick's replacement is hired.
A new intern will replace Debbie Falvey.
Someone from RSC will be asked to replace Dale Askey.
