Announcements
Rick mentioned that the Medical Library has started user testing with Camtasia
software. Users complete a questionnaire, before and after use, and are given
a $40 copy card for their participation. Medical doesn't expect the results to
cause a change in the structure of the site, but it may result in a graphic face-lift.
There was more discussion on the Orbis header and a review of the samples at:
http://www.library.yale.edu/~bturner/frontdoor/
Everyone agreed on the background for #1 and that it should read: Yale University
Library Catalog. Dale will ask Bonnie Turner to mock up three variations of the
#1 header. They will be:
1. #1 header, the addition of University to Yale Library Catalog.
2. #1 with ask a librarian in blue and at the same font size as YULC.
3. #1 with ask a librarian in blue and at the same font size as YULC but without
the Orbs graphic.
WebTrends (Rick and Katie)
There wasn't time for the presentation so there was just some discussion on
the sites. Katie said she has had no feedback on the posted results. There was
talk of the hope that by showing how much use the Library pages get, we could
justify spending more money on web design and possibly getting an in-house web
designer. We can also use WebTrends to track changes and to track the top clicks
after you enter the Library Front Door page.
The remainder of the meeting was held in the Electronic Classroom in CCL.
Demonstration of new Beinecke web site and enhancements to Beinecke Digital
Library (guests: Ellen Cordes and Brian Kupiec)
Ellen stated that the cost for the new Beinecke site was, so far, between $30,000-$35,000
and another $5,000-$10,000 for the calendar component. It took about a year and
they used patrons to do testing and to sort and name the categories listed on
the site.
There was some discussion on being able to change the font sizes within the
site and the possibility of adding printable links to pages containing procedures.
Brian talked about the changes he is making to the Digital Library. One change
in particular, is the order in which records are saved and then displayed in
My Group.
Hours on the FD: another way to present? (Rick)
At this point, everyone feels it would be too much work to convert to a database
for the hours. Rick suggested arranging the library hours horizontally and in
calendar fashion, such as the Princeton site. Possibly display one week at a
time with the exceptions underneath. Keep the drilldown for other libraries.
Rick also liked the format of the University of Rochester site.
Everyone agreed it would be a good idea to have a link to hours off the Library
Locations page. We also need to remove the older hours links as soon as new calendar
goes up.
Since the changes are static, updating three times a year to 66 sites, we need
to get input from the people who update the hours. Rick will talk to Julie about
this and also contact Bonnie about working up some examples.
