Public Interfaces Committee
PIC Minutes
Wednesday, October 27, 2004
Attending: Julie Linden, Dale Askey, Katie Bauer, Debra Falvey, Karen Reardon,
Andy Shimp (recording), Tao Yang, Rick Zwies
1. Announcements
a. New MSSA site: Please send feedback to Stephen.
b. Non-English welcome pages: Russian language translation is underway. The
front door link will be the name of the language. Ask Bonnie to mock up links
on the main section of the page above the text only link and also in the quick
links area above the copyright statement.
2. Linking to citation tools
Katie presented a proposal to add a link for the citation tools page to the
front door. It was decided to add a link under "Research Tools". Katie
is going to ask Bonnie to mock up a couple of variations for the link title,
and we'll see what we like. In addition to information on RefWorks and EndNote,
the page could include links to online citation style guides. A direct link to
RefWorks will be added to the Quick Links in the position of second to the last
link, above "Off Campus Access".
Julie will speak to LHR about combining the links "Job Opportunities"
and "Human Resources." The new link would be called "Working at
the Library". The page would include the current "Human Resources"
page content with a prominent link at the top to the "Job Opportunities"
page.
3. Assessment: moving forward
Katie provided an outline for a proposed usability study. We will need to design
questions that are unambiguous. We can pre-test questions for clarity with staff
who are not affiliated with PIC. We need to purchase a microphone and software
for recording keystrokes. We will have to figure out how to recruit subjects
to test (6-8 students, faculty and maybe staff). We will need to discuss recruiting
subjects with Danuta. It was noted that in a recent presentation on assessment,
Alice had indicated the importance of presenting faculty with a framework specifying
the goals of the testing.
Katie will recommend some key articles on conducting a usability study. For
the next meeting she would like committee members to read the articles and think
about what we want to test.
The question came up about the impact of MetaLib. Katie will check about a
time line for implementation.
4. Medical Library user survey results
Postponed until the next meeting.
