PIC SubCommittee on SFX Menu Redesign
Meeting date: May 31, 2005
Attending: Dale Askey, Katie Bauer, Karen Reardon, Daniel Dollar, Jan Glover,
Tao Yang
Notes:
- Logo Redesign: Decision was made to drop 'SFX' from the Yale SFX Links graphic.
Katie will talk with Meg about funds to have a professional designer create
a new version of the graphic. It will be important to remember to design the
logo so that it can fit into various database layouts as some tend to squash
it now. 18 and 25 pixel versions should be generated so we can check it for
legibility. We would like to see a version with the word 'Links' in mixed case.
- Colors for the new menu: We will keep the current color scheme as there
has been no negative feedback about it and it was agreed we need to keep the
look simple and clean. Katie will investigate ways to highlight the Title and
Source information in the V3 menus.
- Possible new SFX services to be included:
a. We discussed the issue of groupings in the new menu design. It was agreed
that we need to highlight and display services most users want and make it
easy to quickly get to the resource.
b. The 'top four' services were defined as: show full text, search online
journals, search Orbis and request via ILL. Order of these item still to be
determined.
c. Katie will investigate the possibility to display the 'top four' services
at the top of the menu without the need for a grouping. Other services might
then be included in groupings below these top services.
d. No decision was made regarding the desire to show all possible services
(such as Google and Image lookup) and the desire of the readers to just find
the materials.
Action items:
- Review SFX 3.0 menus (URL's below) for style/look.
- Ponder other services to be included.
- Consider ordering of the 'top four' services.
Next meeting: June 9th at 11:00 - CCL Experimental Space (Note Meeting location
change - we can use the SmartBoard in the CCL Space)
