United Nations Treaty Collection, 1945-present. (Buffalo, New York: William S. Hein & Co.) Microfiche, Government Documents and Information Center.

Collection of authentic texts of treaties and international agreements, published to satisfy a Charter [Article 102] obligation. The instruments are reproduced in the original languages, with English and French translation where applicable. Each volume of the cumulative index covers 50-100 volumes.

Congressional hearings were first held early in the 19th century; they became a major component of the deliberative work of Congress following the Civil War. Hearings may be held to consider proposed legislation, as an oversight of specific agencies or programs, or to investigate specific reports or charges of misconduct on the part of a public or private body. The earliest hearings were not widely available to this microfiche collection fills that gap. Post-1935 hearings are held primarily in paper.

Collection of surviving transcripts of committee hearings that were never printed or published. Originally the House of Representatives Rules restricted the availability of hearing transcripts for fifty years. After the first microfiche collection was released, the House of Representatives modified the rules to permit access to transcripts more than thirty years old so this collection will continue to grow.

This collection contains 7300 U.S. Senate Committee surviving hearings transcripts dated 1823 through 1964 and 1965 through 1968 that were never printed and published. Not until 1946 did the Senate commit itself to a policy on recording committee hearings. Prior to that time, the printing, publishing and retention policies varied from committee to committee and this collection reflects this in the unevenness of the content by committee.

Senate Executive Documents and Reports are the formal documents that trace the part played by the Senate committees in exercising the Senate's constitutional Advice and Consent role in the making of treaties and nominations. Prior to 1818 these documents do not appear in printed form and prior to 1930 they were considered confidential with limited distribution. Even after 1930 they were not disseminated through the normal distribution channels.

All of the above congressional publications can be searched using Congressional Index, 1789-1969.

Most of the documents originated in the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department and the Defense Department, but there are also documents from the National Security Council, the White House, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
