2011 Applebaum Award winners

The Harvey M. Applebaum '59 Award is conferred on a Yale College senior for an outstanding essay based on research done in the collections of the Yale University Library's Government Documents & Information Center.

Two awards were conferred in 2011. Alison Weiner (Davenport College) won first prize for her History essay Yielding to Reality: Examining the Rise of a Strong "Chief of Staff" in the Kennedy, Carter, and Clinton Administrations. Her research in presidential staff papers and interviews was central to her discussion of the relationship between presidents and their chiefs of staff and the evolution of that position across three Democratic administrations.

Second prize went to George Bogden (Silliman College) for his Political Science essay Refugees, Statecraft, and Legitimacy: Forced Migration and Foreign Policy in the 1991 Kurdish Refugee Crisis. George used documents from George H. W. Bush’s National Security Council and the United Nations Security Council to examine the strategic motives behind the decision-making of the major state-actors involved in this refugee crisis.

The prize was established in 2007 by the daughters of Harvey M. Applebaum, class of 1959.
