Policies Governing Public Services for U.S. Federal Government Information in Electronic Formats
Please note the specific access policies for entry to the Mudd Library.
The Government Documents & Information Center (GDIC) at Yale University provides public,
no-fee access to computer workstations to access government electronic information
disseminated through the Federal Depository Library Program. Research workstations
with Internet access in the GDIC are available to the general public, subject to the “Policies Governing Use of and Access to Yale University Library
Public Workstations.
Electronic government documents on removable media (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, floppy disk)
that are held in the library’s collections may either be used on a
workstation in GDIC or checked out in accordance with the library's borrowing
privileges. Some CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs are installed on GDIC workstations as “reference” materials
and do not circulate. Patrons may request that an electronic product in
the GDIC collection be installed on a GDIC workstation; GDIC staff will
attempt to install it within one business day of the request.
Downloading of electronic government information is available from GDIC workstations. Yale faculty,
staff, and students with access to Pantheon scratch space may connect to
Pantheon scratch space from GDIC workstations, save data/files to scratch space,
and then retrieve the files from any other computer on the Yale network.
Any library patron may save files to the desktop of the research workstation;
compression software is available on the workstations so that patrons can
compress and e-mail downloaded files to themselves. Web-based e-mail is available.
All GDIC workstations have floppy disk drives and ports for USB drives.
Printing government documents from GDIC workstations is available on a cost-per-page basis.
GDIC offers a black and white printer and a color printer, both operated with the Uniprint system.
The Uniprint system requires patrons to establish a print account, which is available to
Yale affiliates and to the general public. Reference service for electronic government documents
is available to the general public in person at GDIC, via telephone, and via e-mail.
