• Russell is writing a book to explain "mash ups" - a way of combining data on different web sites to make it more useful. He wants to use a copy of part of the library's web site to demonstrate a technique. He is allowed to copy a few pages to his computer and make the changes he needs to demonstrate his idea. He can show the changed page to people on the Internet and in his book. He must acknowledge the Library's web site as the original source of the pages in his academic book or on his web site (simply noting "Courtesty of the Yale University Library" and the URL is sufficient).
• Emily is writing a paper for her school class. She will also present the paper at a conference and hopes to publish it in a journal. She would like to use several screen shots of the Library's web site to illustrate points in her paper. She is free to include pictures of the web site in her paper, the presentation and the journal article, as long as she credits "Yale University Library" as the source of the screen shots.
