Pamphlets and Broadsides
Printed handbills and broadsides have
been part of public culture and life for hundreds
of years, and a number of institutions have seen fit
to digitize their collections during the past few
years. One such collection is the Canadian Pamphlets
and Broadsides Collection at the Thomas Fisher Rare
Book Library at the University of Toronto. Currently,
this online collection contains over 20,000 page images,
and the documents offered here include the 1763 prospectus
for the Quebec Gazette. Visitors will definitely be
impressed with the wide variety of ephemeral documents
here, as they range from items from different political
campaigns to company reports. The search engine offered
by the site is quite nice, and allows users to complete
searches based on author, the language of document,
and a number of other fields. Finally, there is a
short section of technical information that provides
details on how the database was created.
Early
Canadiana Online
A full text online collection of books
and pamphlets documenting Canadian history from the
first European contact to the late 19th century. The
collection is particularly strong in literature, women's
history, native studies, travel and exploration, and
the history of French Canada.
The collection is made up of images of the pages in
the selected books and pamphlets. Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) has been performed on the images
to enhance searching and accessing the texts. However,
the OCR is not fully accurate, due to the age of the
materials and the fact that they were not disbound
before filming, so page images are presented. A small
group of texts may be fully processed and made available
as both page images and electronic text.

Our
Homes are Bleeding Digital Collection
The "Our Homes Are Bleeding"
collection has grown out of the stories of cut-off
lands in British Columbia. These stories are a part
of the history of the reserve system in Canada, aboriginal
title and rights and First Nations resistance to colonial
assertion of land title. The digital collection draws
together several types of primary materials. The records
of the McKenna McBride Royal Commission (1913 - 1916)
include transcripts of testimonies given to the Commission,
photographs and maps. Additional historical records,
including maps, documents, newspaper articles, photographs,
audio and video clips, show the continual assertion
of aboriginal title and rights. Resource lists, narrative
essays, and other resources have been developed to
support the use of the collection.
