Locating Books in Film Studies at the Yale Library

Use Orbis to search for materials on films, people, genres and topics that the library has acquired since 1977. For earlier publications it is still a good idea to check in the SML Card Catalog, even though almost all of it is now in Orbis. To find materials that Yale does not own, you can use these same Library of Congress Subject Headings to search in WorldCat. Use the REQUEST feature in Eureka to request these items through Interlibrary Loan, or use Borrow Direct.

Once you have identified a book, you need to go to the proper library and location. To find books at Sterling Memorial Library, check the Stack Directory (this is an Excel file).

Subject Headings

Subject Headings are used to describe the content of materials with consistent terminology. They are drawn from a "controlled vocablulary" produced by the Library of Congress. For instance, the usual Library of Congress Subject Heading for films is Motion Pictures. However, the term Films may be used for genres, and some books (mostly uncatalogued titles) have the word Cinema. Always look at the subject headings in any catalog or index to make sure that you are searching with the most relevant terminology.

See Film History and Criticism for more information on subject headings.

For more information about using Orbis and the other Yale Library Catalogs see About the Yale Library Catalogs.

Films:

Works about any film can be searched in Orbis using a subject search on the title:

Subject: star wars
Subject: african queen

People:

Works about any person can also be searched in Orbis using a subject search - LastName FirstName:

Subject: greenaway peter
Subject: hepburn katharine
For works (books, movies) by a particular person, use an author search:
Author: lee ang

Genres and Topics:

Use a Keyword search to look for genres and topics, especially if you are unsure of the Library of Congress Subject Heading. A keyword search finds the term anywhere in the Orbis record. When you do a keyword search, be sure to look at the subject headings used to describe this topic and also search by the correct Library of Congress Subject Heading.

Also, use a keyword search if you have multiple concepts or topics to search. Remember that the subject heading for film in general is Motion Pictures, but genres may use the term Films, and a few books (especially uncatalogued items) have a subject headings with the word Cinema.

Keywords: motion pictures and architecture
Keywords: motion pictures and france and history
Keywords: rebels and motion pictures
Keywords: greenaway peter and (art or architecture) [Remember to search LastName FirstName]
Subject: comedy films
Subject: british cinema

See Film Genres and Themes for more detailed information.

To locate government documents on motion pictures, try restricting your search to the Government Documents Center using Orbis's Limits feature.
