Locating Journals and Magazines in Yale Library
See also Online Full-Text Journals, Magazines and Newspapers.
In order to locate journals within the Yale Library collections, you need to consult the Yale Catalogs: Orbis, or the Card Catalog in Sterling Memorial Library. Yale subscribes to hundreds of film studies journals, and owns back files of many journals that are not currently received.
- Get the citation (journal title, volume, number, year, pages) from a periodical index, a bibliography, or any other source.
- Search in Orbis by title of journal. Be sure to select "Journal Title" when you choose the type of search you want, because sometimes there are books with the same title (or with title starting with the same words).
- Note the location and call number.
- Check the SML Stack Directory (in Excel format) to find out what floor the journal is on.
Sometimes you can skip a step by using the SFX feature. This is available in certain databases, and it allows you to search Orbis simply by clicking on a button or icon. SFX also attempts to locate any digital copies of an article that the Yale Library has available.
When you get to the full record for the journal, it is very important to check the volume holdings by looking at the section Library has. This will list the precise location and volumes of a journal that Yale has in its collections. Often there will be gaps in the holdings, or current volumes will be located in the Periodical Reading Room and back issues will be in the SML Stacks.
