Environmental
- Convention on Biological Diversity
was inspired by the world community's growing commitment to sustainable
development. It represents a dramatic step forward in the conservation
of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the
fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic
resources.
- Global Environment Facility (GEF)
provides grants and concessional funding to recipient countries for projects
and programs that protect the global environment and promote sustainable
economic growth.
- United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
(UNCCD)
- United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) helps people in 174 countries and territories to help themselves,
focusing on poverty elimination, environmental regeneration, job creation
and the advancement of women.
- United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) provides leadership and encourages partnerships in caring for the
environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and people to
improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
- United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC) The official site of the body entrusted with
negotiating agreements on mitigating climate change. Particularly
useful is the site's archive of official documents and national communications.

Workstation at Yale University is a collection of texts, finding aids,
data sets, maps, and pointers to print and electronic information. Subject
coverage includes disarmament, economic and social development, environment,
women's issues, human rights, international relations, international trade,
peacekeeping, and population and demography.
Selected Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs)
- Amnesty International is a worldwide
campaigning movement that works to promote all the human rights enshrined
in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards.
- CARE USA is one of ten national members
of CARE International which seeks to assist the world's poor in their efforts
to achieve social and economic well-being. The U.S. site provides
information about CARE programs and members, as wel as a development resource
center.
- Ford Foundation seeks to strengthen
democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international
cooperation, and advance human achievement. Users will find publication
lists, information for grant seekers, news and events, and the online version
of the Foundation's annual report.
- Greenpeace International
gives users detailed information on Greenpeace activities, past and future,
along with topical commentary.
- International Chamber of Commerce
claims to be "the only representative body that speaks with authority on
behalf of enterprises from all sectors in every part of the world."
- International Committee of the Red Cross
(ICRC) acts to help all victims of war and internal violence, attempting
to ensure implementation of humanitarian rules restricting armed violence.
- International Federation of the Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies provides humanitarian relief to people affected
by disasters or other emergencies and development assistance to empower
vulnerable people to become more self-sufficient.

- Agency for International Development
(USAID) USAID is an independent federal government agency that conducts
foreign assistance and humanitarian aid to advance the political and economic
interests of the United States. Their web site features an International
Development Page, Humanitarian Response Page, and others on Economic Growth
and Population and Health. It provides access to the USAID Gopher, USAID
Regional Bureaus, and the USAID FTP server.
- Central Intelligence Agency
- DefenseLINK - Official Web Site of
U.S. Department of Defense Provides official, timely and accurate information
about defense policies, organizations, functions and operations.
Also, DefenseLINK is the single, unified starting point for finding military
information on-line.
- Department of Commerce
- Department of State Foreign Affairs Network
(Department of State) Provides access to the DOSFAN Gopher, which is searchable
through the web. Information on global affairs, economic and trade issues,
treaties, general foreign policy, and the White House, as well as consular
and travel information, contacts and phone numbers, online documents, and
other related servers is available via the DOSFAN Gopher. Available on
the web is an organization chart and a photographic tour of the U.S. Department
of State.

Watch Dogs
- Thomas, Legislative Information on the
Internet Offers full text search capability of legislation by keyword(s)
or bill number for the 103rd and 104th Congresses as well as full text
of the Congressional Record. Major bills, "Hot Legislation," receiving
floor action in the 104th Congress are searchable by topic, popular and/or
short title, number/type, those enacted into law, and those under Congressional
consideration this week.
