Digital Preservation Committee (DPC)

Meeting Notes prepared by Bobbie Pilette

Date:  August 21, 2006, 10:30a.m.

Present: Bobbie Pilette, Kevin Glick, Audrey Novak, Rebekah Irwin, David Gewirtz, E.C. Schroeder

Audrey sent out the revised admin model and general comments were made.  Most folks were in general agreement with the changes; further work on the draft will be made with regards to wordsmithing.  The next draft will be discussed at a later meeting.

Rebekah brought folks up to date on the PREMIS document draft that the PREMIS Task Force has been working on.  Comments on the document are to be submitted to the Task Force by August 25.  They are looking for all levels of comments—detailed to general overview.  There is a general acknowledgement that there may be cases where PREMIS will not/cannot apply.  One question raised had to do with how DPC is envisioning the digital repository and the use of PREMIS.  That is if digital preservation happens within the digital repository—the difference between storing and preservation has to do with the level of service—then will it be possible to ‘force’/generate PREMIS elements from the existing metadata info?  Will PREMIS be required for all digital objects going into the repository?  This was discussed with no conclusion at this time.

·        Review Matthew Beacom’s email and the PREMIS metadata info for Thursday’s meeting.
