Digital Preservation Committee (DPC)

Meeting Notes prepared by Bobbie Pilette

Date:October 31, 2005, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Present: Kevin Glick, E.C. Schroeder, David Gewirtz, Bobbie Pilette, Rebekah Irwin, Gretchen Gano, Audrey Novak

We all reviewed the charge.Clarifying that the preservation framework of policies, metadata framework and the framework for managing classes of digital objects would result in the preservation of digital objects and the development of preservation strategies and a program. It was agreed that the four points that we need to cover in this framework were:education or outreach, who does what, integration of technical infrastructure, and the notion of best practices. We then moved forward from these general understandings into how to translate them into deliverables.

Audrey was able to sum up the free flowing discussion with the need to produce three reports by Fall 2006:

For the moment we have set aside the guidelines and will work on the recommendations. Some from the committee will work on the administrative side (Rebekah, Bobbie, E.C., Kevin) and others on the technical (David, Audrey, Gretchen). We have agreed to skip a full committee meeting on November 7th in order for each group to produce an outline of their respective recommendations that will be submitted via email to the committee as a whole on November 11th and will be discussed at the November 14th.

Next Meeting: November 14th agenda (@Law School dining hall):

        Review of outlines for recommendations

Preservation metadata discussion with Matthew Beacom and Joan Swanekamp
