Yale University Library

Digital Preservation Committee (DPC)

Meeting Notes prepared by Bobbie Pilette

Date:  May 31, 2005, 10:30

Present: Kevin Glick, Bobbie Pilette, David Gewirtz, Ann Green

Absent:  Audrey Novak, E.C. Schroeder

The Preservation Metadata Task Force charge was reviewed.  Ann and I agreed it was fine.  The remaining committee members will review and let David know.

Discussion centered on Kevin’s 5/27 email regarding “original” digital resources.  What is “original”?  The discussion boiled down to David stating that if the bits and bytes are the same there are no copies that they are all originals and Kevin stating that there are no originals but they are all copies.  Point of agreement is:  can’t preserve it until it is known what the creator(s) meant or wanted.  Ann pointed out that we cannot know the creator(s) intent for most of the digital resources we will be dealing with.

As we have Kevin’s definition and point of view already, David will write up the other viewpoint and next week we will discuss and decide how we want it represented in our policy.

·        David will send out via email the Preservation Metadata Task Force charge for any comments.  Please get these to him by Monday, June 6

·        David will get out via email a different view of the discussion on what is an “original” digital object.

·        Definitions to folks on email before the meeting
