Digital Production and Integration Program (DPIP)
Production and Content Integration Working Group
Minutes of October 17, 2006 Meeting
10:00 - 11:00, Room 409 SML
1. E-Reserves demo and discussion
Jen Weintraub and Karen Reardon presented a demonstration of the E-Reserves prototype, showing examples of course lists from the Divinity and Arts libraries accessed both via Orbis and Classes*v2. Medical and Social Science are also participating in this initiative. A single list can contain links to material available through existing library e-resources, links to full text in PDF format scanned by RIS, and links to Orbis records for books on traditional library print reserves. The project includes assessment of staff and faculty satisfaction as well as evaluation of staff resources required to support e-reserves.
2. VRC/Media Services rush order tracking application
George Ouellette demonstrated a web-accessible database designed to track requests for slide digitization submitted to Media Services by the Visual Resources Collection. The tracking application saves time for both units and allows staff to determine the status of any order both quickly and reliably. This solution is of interest to DPIP because it might be applicable to other projects and might be extended to track a wider array of activities. The need for workflow tracking software is described in the DPIP final report.
3. Future of the DPIP WG
The original charge to the DPIP Production and Content Integration Working Group expired in September. The DPIP final report recommends that the group continue through June 2008 as an advisory body for developing, assisting, and promoting DPIP activities. Fred asked members to review the charge and consult with their supervisors about continued participation in the group.
4. New Digital Production Services Working Group
The group discussed the draft charge for a new DPIP subgroup focused on coordination of digital production services: sharing of facilities / expertise, joint projects, avoiding duplication of effort, cost savings, outsourcing, equipment, software, maintenance agreements, etc. Matthew urged the addition of a metadata representative to the membership since metadata capture occurs throughout the production process. The idea was enthusiastically endorsed.
