Digital Production & Integration Program (DPIP)
Project 03 : Electronic Reserves Prototype
Meeting Summary: April 3
Katie reviewed how SFX can link directly to an article. If the article exists in full text from only one vendor - you can put text in the sfx URL and go directly to the article. If more than one vendor has the article, an SFX menu will appear.
Kalee gave an update on integration of an RSS feed with Blackboard - possibilities look good.
We then talked about next steps and the creation of two working groups - one for copyright and one for rules/guidelines for an e-reserves service.
Katie, John, Suzanne if interested, and John Nann from Law will look into the copyright issues. Katie will coordinate the meeting of this group.
George and Dana will look at the rules/guidelines issues.
These working groups will end along draft documents to the group before our next meeting.
Looking towards providing a digitization service we attempt to determine demand - we will review the requests that Medical has had over the past two terms (John will supply that information) and determine what percentage were not available electronically. In addition, we will look at the syllabus for a few courses offered this semester and determine what percentage of the required readings are available electronically and what would have to be digitized from our collections. It will be important to look at courses in the humanities as well as the sciences. Jen, Sandy and Karen will do this research.
Fred will talk to RIS about their role in copyright clearance for course packs.
We will not meet again until May 8th (if I can get a room!). Thank you for your continued work on this project.
Somewhat as a side note, but interesting and appropriate none-the-less, Jeff found this interesting article on SFX:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2005.12.008
"On the surface, SFX, utilizing the concept of context-sensitive linking among library
resources, promises the ability to obtain full text effortlessly. This paper reports
on the results of a three-fold study -online survey, focus group interviews, and
sample testing analysis - to examine library end-user and librarian expectations and
experiences using SFX"
