Know Before You Go
: Checklist for doing research abroad
identify collections and make contact (use homepages or directories in Yale libraries)
visitor privileges -- requirements, cost, etc.
letter of introduction from your faculty advisor
letter of introduction from the Yale University Library
Privileges Office
diploma and/or transcript
passport or other acceptable ID
valid Yale ID (check the expiration date!)
extra passport photos for a temporary library ID
acceptable forms of payment
collection hours and rules
ongoing or upcoming renovations or moves that could impede access to particular materials
limits on number of reader spaces at the library
availability and cost of photocopying
information you are expected to know about the materials in advance (search catalogs online or in Yale libraries)
time required to gain access to and use materials
other rules -- e.g., are laptops allowed?
preparations
arrange acceptable forms of payment, if they can be obtained here
find out about resources affected by foreign access restrictions (

set up and test

on your laptop
return all Yale Library materials or arrange for someone to check your mail who can return any recalled materials
don't request materials (Circulation, Eli Express, or ILL) right before you leave
