Preparation: knowing content/material breeds confidence (but you don’t have to be Superman - allow yourself the option of saying “ I don’t know but I will try to find out”
Be patient, especially with older adults - they often have slower reaction times. Get used to being asked to repeat a step 3 or 4 times (from 3 different people)
Know how to do basic things (checking that plugs are plugged in, how to log on a machine with correct passwords, ability to reboot, loading files from floppy, CD-ROM, etc.) but rely on systems assistance for difficult or time consuming situations
Know that an introduction of self, objectives of class, overview of facility, expectations/assumptions is important as well as the ability to summarize, engage attendees, etc.
Enthusiasm - create a relaxing environment conducive for learning. Remember that the fear is often over using computers not the content itself
Be who you are - some are straightforward, others use humor, etc. Find your own style of teaching!
