5. SAVING AN IMAGE FROM CLARINEWS IN PINE
An attractive feature of ClariNews is that it provides images, such as photographs
and cartoons, that are distributed by wire services. The best and easiest way
to view these images is by using ClariNews on the Web.
You cannot view these in Pine. An additional drawback to using Pine for images
is that the accompanying text that describes the picture is a bit obscured.
However, it is possible to view the caption and to save an image on your Pantheon
account to download to your own computer. You will need software to download
the file to your own computer, as well as image viewing software on your computer.
If Netscape is what you use to download files and to view images, it's best
to go directly to ClariNews on the Web.
If you have reason to save images in Pine, here's how to do it:
Go into the newsgroups and select and subscribe to the groups you want as
described in the previous pages. Many of the ClariNews
groups contain photos. There are also groups that contain only images. To find
these groups with images, search for
clari., as described earlier,
and then use the W (Whereis) command in the list of ClariNews groups to find those
with "photo" or "cartoon" in the name.
ClariNews offers photos in two resolutions, [Sm]all and
Large [Lg]. Each article containing photos is posted as two articles with the
same story, and you can see the file size in the article heading. The larger
file will have better resolution, but will take up more disk space and will
take longer to download.
The first step in saving an image in Pine is to select the
story with the file size you want. The heading will give you a list of attachments,
with information about the file size and the existence of captions.
You can get more information about the photo by typing "V"
to "View Attachments" -- including the photo captions.
To read a caption, highlight it (using the arrow keys) and
type enter (or
V for "View").
To return to the list of attachments, type
E to "Exit Viewer."
To save the photo, select it and type
S (Save). You can change the name of the photo that is displayed before confirming,
but make sure you retain the extension (usually .jpg). For example, save cnt29447.jpg
as plane.jpg .
The image will be saved to your home directory on the Pantheon;
to see it, type ls -a at the Pantheon (mercury, minerva, etc.) prompt. To delete
the photo from your account, use the remove command. For example, to remove
plane.jpg, type rm plane.jpg at the Pantheon prompt.
