4. READING CLARINEWS STORIES IN PINE
To read stories in one of your subscribed groups, highlight the group's name
to select it and press enter. This will bring up a list of stories from the
past two weeks, in order by date. The order -- oldest to newest or newest to
oldest -- depends on the same Pine settings as for email. In fact, at this point
the Pine newsreader behaves exactly as your Pine email does. To move up and
down in the list, use the arrow keys or
N and P (Next and Previous Messages). To return to the list of stories, type I
(Index).
The heading for each story provides the date it was posted, the source of the
story (such as UPI for United Press International), and as much of the title
as will fit on the screen. The number of messages in the group is indicated
at the top right of the screen -- however, stories with photos are usually duplicated,
so in many cases there are fewer stories than indicated.
To read a story, highlight it (using the arrow keys and the space bar and
minus key to move up and down in the index), and press enter.
You will see the source of the story, newsgroups to which it was crossposted,
and the percentage of the story that is visible on your screen. Press the spacebar
on your keyboard to advance to the next screen.
You can delete messages by typing
D, or save them as files on your Pantheon account by typing S. If you return to
the index screen (list of messages), you can use the ; (select) command to delete
or save multiple messages at once. Since ClariNews only contains stories from
the past two weeks, you might not need to delete messages you've read.
Notice the commands at the bottom of the screen, which are the same as in Pine
email. Return to the list of stories in the group by typing
I (Index), or to the list of groups with the command L (List). Type O ("Other")
to see more available commands.
