Academic Universe is a Internet interface to the Lexis-Nexis news and information
service that provides access to newspapers, magazines, transcripts, business
and legal information, and more.
The NEXIS service began in 1979, starting with news content, as a companion
to the LEXIS® service. NEXIS has grown to become the largest news and business
online information service with not only news, but company, country, financial,
demographic, market research and industry reports.
The NEXIS service is unmatched in depth and breadth of information, offering
more than 13,800 sources of news and business information.
120,000 new articles are added each day from worldwide newspapers, magazines,
news wires and trade journals.
Sources include the New York Times, CNN, The Economist, AP and NPR. Academic
Universe also offers legal statutes, business directories, biographical information
and corporate profiles.
Academic Universe is not the best place to look for scholarly or biomedical
articles, but is an excellent source for current events/news, legal and government
information, as well as business news and corporate information.
Academic Universe is available through the library
home page under Databases
& Article Searching.
How to Search Academic Universe
The
main menu of Academic Universe contains a series of links that point to
a specific "search form" or topic. The search forms each differ slightly, providing
appropriate choices for source lists and dates, depending on the topic. The
search forms provide a place for you to specify the subject (News, Business,
Legal Research, etc.) to research. The forms also allow you to enter additional
terms to further refine your search. Additionally, search forms provide drop-down
menus from which you may choose to limit your search to a particular source
or group of sources and/or a particular time frame (e.g. six months, one year,
all years). These options will vary depending on your search topic and its associated
search form.
