Yale University Libraries

Diversity and Service in a Multicultural Environment

Description:       In these pilot sessions, Library staff will learn a common language and framework with which to build dialogue on issues of diversity through Yale University Libraries.  In the first half of the session, awareness of how dynamics of diversity play out within the Libraries will be developed. Participants will develop a personal diversity profile and a specific action plan. A skills-based model for exercising personal leadership on issues of diversity will be taught and practiced.  In the second half, exercises and discussions will focus on the challenges of serving international customers, defining culture and recognizing assumptions and behaviors associated with cultural norms.  From this common framework, participants will look at barriers to effective cross-cultural communication and explore a model for cross-cultural competency.
