Friends
of African Village Libraries (FAVL)
Friends of African Village
Libraries is a small non-profit based in San Jose. Its founders
are two Santa Clara University professors, Michael Kevane and
Leslie Gray. After conducting a year of research in the village
of Bereba, Michael and Leslie looked for a meaningful way to
thank the villagers for their hospitality and help with the
research. They noticed the complete lack of books in the village,
and decided to explore the possibility of opening a library.
The result is the creation of Friends of African Village Libraries
and the library
in Bereba. The non-profit is growing, after requests
from other villages showed that the need is great, and that
Bereba is by no means the only village where people’s
situations deny them access to books.
