Subtle Descent into SlaveryIn the center image which takes the shape of a lettuce leaf representing the bitter herb, Berkowitz demonstrates the slow descent of the Israelites into slavery. A graphic timeline which goes from top to bottom depicts Joseph in the coat of many colors and then being sold by his brothers and brought to Egypt. The bottom image shows the naked and faceless slaves descending into the abyss of bondage. The text surrounding the image is from Exodus 1:9-13 which tells of Pharaoh's scheme to enslave the Israelites. |
