Visual Resources Collection Technology Specialist
Band II
Work Week Standard - 37.5 hrs (M-F, 8:30-5:00)
Position General Purpose
The Yale University Library seeks an innovative specialist with a strong commitment
to client-based support services to serve as part of the Visual Resources Collection
group in the Integrated Library Technology Services department. The position
reports to the Manager of the Visual Resources Collection. With a thorough knowledge
of resources available in the Visual Resources Collection, the Library and elsewhere
on campus, the successful candidate will act as a liaison to Art History faculty
and other clients. Offers specialized instructional and technical support to
Art History faculty in all aspects related to the use of the Library’s
digital collections in teaching to determine service need and requirements to
facilitate their digital teaching. Performs analysis of departmental activities,
functions, services and guides the design, implementation or improvement of
existing VRC services and library technology applications used by VRC clients
(faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates).
Essential Duties
1. Analyze faculty and curricular needs to identify gaps in services and resources
provided by the VRC in support of digital teaching. Analyze the feasibility
of new services and production procedures or modifications to existing VRC or
Library services to meet service and resource gaps. Work independently or in
a project team to document service requirements and resource development, project
scope, and projected level of effort. Create project plan.
2. Provide overall project management for implementation of new or enhanced
services and production procedures while working with other collaborative partners
across the University, such as Same Day Digitization Service or the design and
implementation of modifications to the VRC digitization workflow, for example,
to incorporate the addition of new institutional content to faculty personal
image collections using Extensis Portfolio.
3. Serve as primary training and support person for the VRC and faculty’s
use of software programs such as Extensis Portfolio, PowerPoint, ARTstor OIV
and locally developed programs for instructional technology and digital asset
management of personal and institutional collections. Document and report problems
to Web, Workstation & Digital Consulting Services. Document and track problem
resolution and provide feedback to back faculty on problem status and resolution.
4. Work with faculty to identify gaps in institutional collection content and
facilitate the development of new digital content by coordinating requests for
digitization or discovering sources of new material n the Library’s collections
(print or digital).
5. Create, edit, vet and manage ingest of metadata records and digital images
for digitized materials and locate new materials in print or digital form based
on faculty requests.
6. Demonstrate the use of software for scanning, image editing, image discovery,
and presentations (currently PowerPoint, Keynote and the ArtStor off-line viewer).
7. Collaborate with faculty in the development of new or enhanced software by
analyzing, assessing and articulating faculty requirements. Work closely with
programming staff and the Usability and Assessment Librarian to ensure final
product meets described needs. Test new software and recommend improvements.
Coordinate rollout of software enhancements to faculty.
8. Refer computer problems to appropriate experts as needed and track problems
through resolution. Coordinate tracking of problem and resolution in the departmental
blog.
9. Plan and conduct presentations, demonstrations, or workshops for graduate
and undergraduate students, faculty, or Library staff on any topic related to
digital teaching with visual resources and associated materials using the Library’s
collections. Write and edit online and paper documentation for software, procedures,
and services.
Education and Experience
1.Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of the arts and humanities.
2.Three years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3.Experience discovering image content and with issues related to display of
image content via presentation software.
4.Experience with digital asset management systems used at Yale such as Luna
Insight, Extensis Portfolio, ContentDM, etc.
5.Experience using image creation / manipulation tools including PhotoShop.
6.Experience with classroom presentation tools including PowerPoint or Keynote.
PC/MAC experience.
7.Experience with managing collaborative or inter-departmental projects.
8.Demonstrated experience assisting users with various levels of technical expertise.
9.Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining web sites using XHTML, ASP,
PhP, or other scripting languages.
10.Preferred: Advanced degree in art history or related fields. Experience supporting
classroom projectors and plasma/smartboard displays. Experience supervising
student or temporary employees. Experience with cataloging standards, i.e.,
Dublin Core, VRA2.0 or CDWA Lite.
