Library Service Assistant I: Czech/Slovak Translator

General Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the archivist at the Fortunoff Video Archive,
the Czech/Slovak translator watches video testimonies of Holocaust survivors
recorded in Czech/Slovak and writes a comprehensive summary in English on a
PC, verifying geographic headings and names of historically important figures.
Hours of work must be scheduled M-F between 8:30 and 4:45. Position duration
is 20 weeks.
Essential Duties:
1. View video testimonies of Holocaust survivors recorded in Czech/Slovak and
writes a comprehensive summary in English on a PC
2. Verify geographic headings and names of historically important individuals
with a set of provided print resources
3. Provide other Czech/Slovak translation assistance to archivists as required
Experience and Training
Native fluency in Czech/Slovak, and excellent spoken and written English; one
year of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent
combination of experience and education.
Skills and Abilities
1. Previous work experience must demonstrate accuracy and consistency.
2. Dependability in following directions and procedures.
3. Willingness to work with emotionally difficult materials
4. Commitment to ensuring confidentiality of survivors’ personal information.
5. Familiarity with computers, and moderate keyboarding skills.
6. Preferred: knowledge of Jewish history, culture and the history of the Holocaust.
