Guidelines for Internships

The objective is to provide opportunities within the Yale libraries, during the fall or spring semesters, for students seeking practical/on-the job experience. The on-the-job experience should be designed to provide students with a supervised professional experience which integrates the theoretical and practical aspects of activities in the student's professional field.

The following are the guidelines and requirements for the program:

STUDENTS:
· Students will register for 3 or 6 credits.
· Students must meet the prerequisite of 12 credits in library science prior to internship.
· For three credits, 150 contact hours are required for completion.  These contact hours must be in not less than 5-hour blocks for each contact.
· Students will be required to write a synopsis of the experience as part of their grading procedure.
· Students will express their preference for a particular area of interest for placement.
· Students will submit an application, permission slip and a one-page resume. A copy of this information must be submitted to Library Human Resources.
· Students will be able to perform in the following areas: Technical Services, User Services, Administrative Operation, Public Services.

DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS:
· The internship may begin no sooner than the first day of classes of each semester and the intern must be supervised by a professional librarian with an MLS or equivalent degree.
· The student must be exposed to tasks that are related to the professional aspects of the library.  The student may also be assigned to a specific project under the supervision of a librarian.
· The student must have 150 (3 credits) contact hours or 300 (6 credits) contact hours over a period of 10 weeks. These contact hours must be in no less than 5-hour blocks of time.  Documentation of attendance is necessary.
· The supervisor will be required to evaluate the student's performance in a written form at the conclusion of the internship period and submit evidence of attendance and completion of the program
· An assigned full time faculty member will make visitations to the library.  The faculty member will meet to discuss the student's progress with the supervisor and the student.
· The Department must submit an application, permission slip, hire request, and a one-page resume in order to obtain on-line permission and other authorizations. A copy of this information must be submitted to Library Human Resources.

TIME:
· The internship will comprise 150 hours (3 credits) or 300 hours (6 credits) during the course of one academic semester.  Students who apply for 6 credits are expected to spend no less than 15 hours per week interning in a work schedule that involves no less than 4 hours per day; for 3 credits, students are expected to spends no less than 10 hours per week in a work schedule that involves no less than 5 hours per day.

SUGGESTED PROGRAM:
· It is suggested that the program will include an interview, orientation, then the student's training/assignment.
