A Word From Alice
Flooding and Damage in Sterling Memorial Library
As most of you know by now, there was an emergency in the Library over the
weekend. A steam valve in Trumbull College burst, which caused the effect of
forcing steam into the Sterling Memorial Library building. The excessive heat
set off sprinklers, as well as causing condensation which dripped down on to
collections and equipment. Some tiles from the ceiling in Machine City and other
areas fell in. Teams of staff came in very quickly on Saturday and Sunday. The
disaster plan designed by Bobbie Pilette and her colleagues in Preservation
worked extremely well, as did the ITLS emergency plan led by Karen Reardon and
Ernie Marinko to protect our servers. Security led by John Vincenti responded
immediately, and we received great support from Yale and New Haven Police and
Fire personnel, and from Yale Facilities, Custodial and Security staff. The
remediation company Munters, with whom the University has a contract, worked
round the clock to remove damaged materials for treatment, and drying and dehumidifying
rooms and materials. As of this writing we have been able to determine that
overall the damage is far less than we might have feared.
I wish to convey my heartfelt thanks, more than words can express, to all those
staff who worked through the weekend and who will continue to give their best
efforts to making sure that the damage has been kept to a minimum. The dedication
shown by staff in this emergency, as well as by some of our spouses and partners
who also came in to help with moving books, is truly extraordinary.
THANK YOU.

Library In Focus
Medical Library Collection Development and Management
On September 1, 2005 the Technical Services Department in the Medical Library
changed its name to Collection Development and Management to reflect its new
emphasis on collections and managing electronic resources.
A usage study has conclusively shown that our patrons prefer electronic access
to print. The reorganization will support the continued migration from print
journals to electronic journals. Staff now spend 80% of their time on electronic
resources as compared to 20% before the reorganization. Electronic materials
are now a routine part of everyone's job.
In the new structure Cindy Crooker, as Director, will focus on collection development,
description (i.e. cataloging), and monographic acquisitions supported by three
other staff members. Daniel Dollar, the Associate Director, has primary responsibility
for serials (print and electronic) and supervises three serials staff.
With the reorganization, the department received a whole new look.

Renovation Updates
ILL/Document Delivery Department
The ILL/Document Delivery Department will temporarily relocate to the L&B
Room in May 2006 as a new office is constructed in the basement of SML. The
new office should be finished in early Fall 2006, when the department will move
to its new, permanent space.
Art and Architecture Library
In June 2006 the Art and Architecture Library will move to swing space on Crown
Street, across from Louis' Lunch. The library will reside there for at least 18
months while Paul Rudolph's Art and Architecture Building is renovated and a new
Art History building is built on York Street. Eventually the Drama Library, Visual
Resources Library, and Arts of the Book Collection will be moved to the new Art
History Building. The Art and Architecture Library will connect the two buildings.
Event Highlights
Law School Craft Show
The Yale Law School held a craft show on December 6. Three library staff members
contributed handmade goods to the show. Mickey Koth, from the Catalog Department
at the Music Library, sold several items including beaded jewelry, buttons with
different sayings on them, and music CDs on which she performs. MaryJane Millington,
from the Catalog Management Department at SML, contributed jewelry made from
semi-precious stones, knit scarves and tote bags. May Robertson, from ILL/Document
Delivery at SML, sold stuffed penguins and hippos made from fabrics such as
velvet and cashmere. Shoppers at the show seemed to enjoy seeing the creative
and well-made items their colleagues displayed.
