Librarian in Residence Program
Ethelene Whitmire
During the summer of of 1997, the Search Committee selected Ethelene Whitmire,
a doctoral candidate in higher education at the University of Michigan. She
wanted to take advantage of our program in order to get practical professional
library experience in an academic library. Ms. Whitmire chose three different
experiences at Yale, spending eight months in each library unit. In her first
assignment Ms. Whitmire worked with the Associate University Librarian responsible
for reader services, who was interested in assessing, evaluating, and identifying
areas for improvement in Sterling Memorial Library's reference and instructional
services. Her second eight months were spent in the Kline Science Library as
a reference librarian, and her third eight months in the Social Science Library
and Government Documents and Information Center. She has been involved in numerous
library-wide, campus, community, and national activities, including being awarded
two library SCOPA grants and publishing articles. Upon completion of her term,
Ms. Whitmire accepted a teaching position in the library science program at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
