Research Leave for Professional Staff
The following are the terms governing
paid research leaves for professional staff members as approved by the Provost
and the Yale Corporation in February, 1975:
1. Only full-time staff are eligible
2. Applicants should ordinarily hold an appointment equivalent to Librarian
III, or higher, and should have at least five years of Yale Library service, unless
applicant joined the system at the equivalent of Librarian III (or higher grade),
in which case the minimum required Yale Library services will be three years
3. Maximum leave shall be three months
4. A successful applicant is not eligible
to apply for a new leave for four years after the expiration of a leave
5.
A study leave does not qualify as "research leave"
6. Requests for research leave must be submitted to the Associate University
Librarian for Human Resources, Organizational Development and Community Relations
once there has been approval from the supervisor, department head, and AUL.
7. The University Librarian will establish a
screening committee for leave applications. Recommendations of this committee
will be sent to the Provost who will approve or disapprove the leave. Notification
of decision will be provided by Library Human Resources.
8. Other things being
equal, an applicant's performance history will be taken into consideration in
the screening process
9. Generally speaking, research projects primarily of
a scholarly nature will be accorded equal weight with "bibliographic" or library-oriented
projects, but any project must meet acceptable standards of intrinsic merit
10. The Library must be in a position from both a staffing and financial point
of view to sustain the absence of a staff member who is to be on leave. Apart
from this limitation, the combined absences in any one-year may not exceed 24
months of staff time
