Background

Presented here is a very small portion of a report of activity on one Yale University Library web server in June 2004. Most of the library’s web pages are stored on this server (www.library.yale.edu, also known as Ogma). This report does not count activity on other library servers, such as Orbis searches, database and ejournal searches, and Insight or Digital Library searches. The report also does not include activity on the servers for the Yale law and medical libraries.

What is a Page View?
This report is based on an analysis of the log files for the library’s web server (Ogma) by software called WebTrends. This software was purchased for use by the Library earlier this year. The web server log files record each time a request comes to the server for a particular file. To report activity on the server, WebTrends lets us count by page hits or page views. What is the difference between a page hit and a page view? A single page on the library’s web site might consist of an html file containing text and also containing links to several associated image files. When someone looks at a web page with four images on it, this would be recorded as a single request for the page (one page view on the one html file) plus a separate request for each of the four images links, resulting in five “page hits” recorded in the log file. The page view statistic lets us count some files (for example, html or htm files) as one page view excluding the individual image hits. Page views are considered less inflated and more accurate than page hits (in June 2004, there were well over eight million hits on the library’s web server).
