LiSA Minutes
July 27, 2006
Donaldson Commons

MEMBERS PRESENT: Melissa Vantine, Gareth Gibson, Paula Zyats, Tara Kennedy, David McMahon, Michael Rush, Andrew Gray, Maryetta Russell.

MEMBERS ABSENT: Sarah Burge, Kathryn James, Susan Tucker, Pamela Clifford, Josephine Laursen.

Meeting convened at 2:10 PM. David McMahon opened the meeting with a request for a minute-taker; Mike volunteered.

STAFF FIELD DAY:
Mike Rush reported that the final total of RSVPs for the Field Day was 158. Due to the threat of rain (even though it only rained for about 20 minutes during the picnic), approximately 80 showed up. Everyone seemed satisfied with the location, especially since so many staff members live in the neighborhood. The swimming was washed out by the rain, but only the children seemed interested. Paula noted that Alice's house is a little far to expect children to walk to. Because of the large RSVP numbers the event went $275 over budget.

BLOOD DRIVE:
The blood drive was very successful. The Red Cross collected 65 pints of useable blood, a record for Yale blood drives. Many walk-ins were turned away because of a full schedule and others were turned away due to the restrictions on foreign residency and travel. Andrew mentioned that Diane Turner asked him to remind LiSA that postings in libraries should only be placed on bulletin boards, not taped or tacked to the walls.

OFFICERS:
David asked if anyone was interested in serving as Vice Chair. Gareth volunteered to serve as vice chair. His nomination will be put to a vote at the next meeting. No one volunteered to serve as secretary, so the responsiblity for the minutes will continue to rotate unless someone volunteers.

NOOKS & CRANNIES:
Maryetta reported that the Grove St. Cemetary tour was very successful, attended by 18-20 staff members. She felt it is definitely a good tour to repeat every year. Gareth reported that he is still trying to reach the contact person for another tour of the organ.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL:
The date is confirmed with the AULs for Aug. 30th. David asked if we need to reserve the courtyard. Maryetta and Andrew said that we just need to make sure the grass isn't cut on the morning of the social. Maryettta reviewed the supplies that are available. No one has a good estimate of the number of people who attended in the past, but it is in the hundreds. There was discussio of ways in which we might reliably count the turnout. Ideas included a raffle and using a clicker to count.

Dave will send a yulibl message to ask for scoopign volunteers to work 1/2 hour shifts. We discussed when we should start the social, at 3 or 3:30. The concern was to make sure custodial staff can attend. David will contact custodial about setup and to see if they are willing to pick up ice cream from Ashley's as it is needed. We agreed that we would use the helium tank from the committee fair for baloons. We will need name badges and labels for the flavors.

David will include in his email a request for anyone who has dietary restrictions to let him know if they want sugar free ice cream or sorbet. David will also confirm with Ashley's what they will supplie in terms of toppings, cones, cups, and spoons. It was decided that we will use the remaining field day beverages in the LiSA closet rather than buying more. We will need to buy some more bottled water. The drinks will be chilled in the Sick Room refridgerator before the social. Maryetta will follow up with Julie Niemeyer to see if she would be interested in setting up some music for part of the time of the social.

Meeting adjourned at 2:50. Next meeting: Aug. 10, location TBD.
