LiSA Minutes
July 17, 2008
SML Room B69
Meeting convened at 2:10 p.m. by Soli Johnson.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Andrew Gray, Soli Johnson, Barbara Heck, Laura Tatum, Rebecca Hamilton, Pat Simon, Kathy Eow, Clayton McGahee, and Abdul Hannawi
GREENING OF LiSA:
Soli would like to include LiSA as part of the ‘greening’ of Yale. LiSA members would try to reduce the amount and type of materials that we use in our events that are ‘trashed’ at the end. The members agreed that this was a good idea. Soli will follow up by determining what could be recycled at the Ice Cream Social (biodegradable spoons and cups for example) and will see what the associated costs would be.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL:
The budget for the Ice Cream Social is $2000.00. Soli will contact the “Green Team” to see if they would like to co-sponsor the event. The Ice Cream Social will be held on August 19, 2008 form 3:00 to 5:00. We will begin set up at 2:00. The group discussed details of the event involving ideas for keeping the ice cream cooler, rain dates, and possible activities.
HOLIDAY PARTY:
Although it seems early, several group members mentioned that we should get started planning for the Holiday Party. Barbara will contact the AULs to see if they can all come sometime during the week of December 14, 2008. The Beinecke is still under renovation and the issue of child safety (in relation to the staircase especially) would remain even afterwards. The space in the L&B had worked out well last year so Barbara will ask that it be made available again. The budget for the Holiday Party will be $7500.00.
HOLIDAY RAFFLE:
The issue of the Holiday Raffle was brought up in connection with the Holiday Party. Laura mentioned that it was difficult to go door to door in November to solicit gifts and suggested that we contact businesses by e-mail or letter earlier in the fall as an alternative. Melissa has left us copies of the template and letters she designed as ‘thank you’s so we could do a similar solicitation letter based upon our list of past donors.
FOOD DRIVE:
Laura updated the group on the LiSA Food Drive. Thus far, a small amount of food had been collected. Laura will send out another YULib message requesting donations and highlighting the virtual donation page. The drive could be extended if necessary to obtain additional donations.
BLOOD DRIVE:
Soli will try to schedule a blood drive for the fall. Clayton outlined the process for sponsoring a drive and our responsibilities. He thought that HGS would be a good location again and mentioned the ready availability of graduate student volunteers to man the appointment table outside the donation room. The SML Lecture Hall was also suggested as a possible site.
FALL STAFF RECEPTION:
Andrew has proposed an October date to the AULs and will update us at the next meeting. The food for the spring reception was good and we will probably stay with Publick Cup (Koffee II) for the fall program.
NOOKS & CRANNIES:
Soli mentioned that the two Babylonian tours had been consolidated into one tour. The list of possible tours will be circulated at the next meeting. LiSA members were urged to poll other staff to see what new places (and old) would be interesting to people and could fit within our scheduling restraints.
FILM:
Katherine wanted to know if a screening of Hollywood Librarian would be possible. A few members had heard of the movie and thought that it might be fun to have a showing on campus.
MEETING TIME AND PLACE:
July 31, 2008 in the Librarians Courtyard.
