Despite having a year of retrospection and transition, the Managerial and Professional Staff Association (M&PSA) is proud to have accomplished the following in the 1996/1997 academic year:

New Staff Reception

M&PSA and Library Administrative Services continued the tradition started last year to honor both new M&P employees and new C&T employees at the new staff reception held November 6, 1996 at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The reception was considered a success and was well attended. This year, M&PSA decided to announce in advance when the introductions were to happen. That way staff will be able to plan when to arrive at the reception. In past years, guests inadvertently missed the introductions because they were not told of the time when it happened.

Holiday Raffle

Again M&PSA sponsored a raffle, in conjunction with the annual Library Administrative Services holiday party, to benefit Columbus House, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in New Haven. The party and raffle were held on December 17, 1996 at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. This year, the Council members were able to raise a total of $848.00. The members first collected donated prizes from local merchants and then sold raffle tickets throughout the library system. A sizable amount of tickets were also sold at the holiday party right up to the time of the raffle drawing.

Suggestions on how to make the raffle run more smoothly next year were passed along to the new co-chairs. It was particularly difficult to manage the money after the raffle was over. A secure place, preferably a safe, is needed to store the proceeds until the next day when it can be taken to the bank to be exchanged for a bank check.

Discussions

The remainder of the academic year, the Council members of M&PSA wrestled with the mission and future of this association. No conclusions were made nor was a new mission statement written. It is critical for M&PSA to have a clear sense of its mission and to know where it fits in with Library Administrative Services and SCOPA. It is hoped that the new council will continue to work on these issues and to prepare a new mission statement to submit to Library Administrative Services.

Elections

Elections for new council members were held in May. The following individuals were elected to a two-year term as Council members:

Alexis Hagadorn, Preservation
Rebecca Hamilton, Acquisitions
Emily Horning, Research Services & Collections
Marianna McKim, Research Services & Collections
Anthony Riccio, Circulation
Andy Shimp, Engineering
Kalee Sprague, Systems
