What are Digital Library collections?
Digital Library collections are image collections made available using software originally developed by the Beiencke Rare Book & Manuscripts Library to support their digital collections. (See: http://beinecke.library.yale.edu/brbldl/ ). The software has been used to make other Library collections available including the Walpole Digital Library Collection and the African American Studies Digital Library. Because the application was written at the Yale Library, the development effort continues with product enhancements being written by programmers at the Beinecke Library as well as the Library Web & Workstation Services Group. The generic term 'Digital Library' is used to refer to any collection made available using the Digital Library software.
What software do I need to view images in a Digital Library collection?
The Digital Library software is a web-based application. Images may be viewed using a web browser. (Note: Microsoft Internet Explorer is the recommended browser for viewing Digital Library Collections.)
If you wish to view the most detailed view of each image (an image type called the 'SID') you must download and install the free Lizard Tech Mr. Sid Viewer plug-in.(Download Mr. Sid Viewer here) and the free version of a JP2 plug-in for IE or for Firefox
Note: If you wish to view Audio or Video files with Digital Library Collections, we recommend you install Quicktime Viewer 6.2 or later. (Windows Media Play will work also).
Where can I view the Digital Library collections on campus?
The Digital Library software is web-based so it can be viewed from any workstation on campus with a web browser.
Do I need other software to view Audio and/or Video clips in Digital Library collections?
Quicktime or Windows Media Player can be used to view the Audio and/or Video clips in Digital Library collections.
For PC's Quicktime is available from: http://www.library.yale.edu/lso/workstation/insight40.html.
For Macs, you should be able to download the most current version of QuickTime at http://download.yale.edu:8180/software/mac.jsp. If it isn't available there, you may have to try http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ to find the latest version.
Can I print images from Digital Library collections?
You can print pages of images by using 'File' / 'Print' in your browser. Other methods of downloading, grouping and storing images are outined in the Using a Digital Library Collection documentation.

Access to some Digital Library Collections is restricted to the Yale Campus, for off-campus access; use the
