Policy on the Programmatic Approach to Library Web
Development
Recognizing the
programmatic importance of the Library's Web presence, the following
principles and structure will guide the development and maintenance of Web
pages and sites representing the Yale University Library.
- Web Development
Specialists In consultation with Library Human Resources, LMC members
will designate at least one Web development specialist for units under
their direction. The Web development specialist will serve as
a resource for other staff members, including student staff, with Web
development responsibilities. The Web development specialist will
be required to possess an appropriate level of knowledge about Web development
and the Library Web server. This staff member will also be responsible
for ensuring that Web pages in the unit adhere to Web development policies
and guidelines developed by Web Advisory Group (WAG - the Library's
Web Advisory Group has been replaced by the Public
Interfaces Committee, PIC), to University policies (including specific
"proscriptions on use" noted in the Yale University Information Technology
Appropriate Use Policy located at Yale
University Policy, and to copyright law.
PIC, in cooperation
with the Web, Workstation & Digital Consulting Services (WW&DCS),
will maintain a regular training program and appropriate documentation
for library staff designated as Web development specialists.
-
The Web development
specialist should possess a minimal set of skills as mandated by WAG.
These skills currently include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Familiarity with Library Web development policies;
- Working knowledge of HTML;
- Working knowledge of the designated Web editor(s);
- Understanding of basic UNIX commands;
- Understanding of the structure of the Library Web Server, directories and permissions;
- Understanding of FTP.
- Authorized Web
Development Tools: PIC and the WW&DCS will have the joint authority
to select and provide support for standard Web development tools, such
as HTML editors, Dreamweaver, and assure an ongoing assessment of such
tools. WW&DCS and PIC will provide staff with the basic assistance
and training needed for using these tools. The Library Human Resources
Staff Training program may also organize training sessions.
- Accounts on the
Library Web Server: The WW&DCS creates staff accounts on the library
Web server. In order to prevent damage to Web content, the head
of the WW&DCS, in consultation with the unit head whenever possible,
will have the authority to refuse or suspend public directory accounts
and/or directory permissions for staff members lacking necessary Web
development skills.
