John Hale, the only family portrait
This portrait of John Hale, second oldest of the 12 children of Richard and Elizabeth Hale, is the only known portrait of any member of the family. Nathan was sixth among the nine boys and three girls, and some 30 years John's junior. John and his brother Joseph marched to Boston with the militia on the "Lexington Alarm" in 1755. John prospered as a farmer in Coventry. Joseph died soon after the war.
