A spy from the enemy…
Routine notations in the British headquarters orderly book on September 22, 1776, said that "the packet for Europe will be Ready to sail Tuesday the 24th Inst:" and "A spy from the enemy (by his own full Confession) apprehended Last night, was this day Executed at 11 oClock in front of the Artilery Park" - authoritative confirmation of when and where Hale was hanged.
