In 1793 John Trumbull, the patriot artist, prepared this hand-colored plan for the landscaping of the Yale campus. He included the siting of outhouses, which he called the "Temples of Cloacina." He was concerned that it was "too much the custom of New England to place [them] conspicuously," and he would have them "concealed as much as possible, by planting a variety of shrubs...." These buildings are drawn as three pale orange squares in the upper center portion of the map.
