Some nineteenth-century handwriting is very clear. Fine penmanship was an asset to those creating permanent records.

Edward C. Herrick was Yale College librarian from 1843 to 1858 and treasurer from 1852 to 1862. Here from his record of "Payments for books bought from A. D. 1979 to 1860" is a list of Corporation actions concerning expenditures for the library.
