RLG and Archival Resources The RLG Union Catalog (RLIN) is a comprehensive database reflecting the collections of major research and academic libraries; archives and museums; law, medical, and theological libraries; art and music libraries; area studies collections; public and corporate libraries; historical societies and book clubs. It contains everything from books and serials to archives, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, photographs, posters, and computer files. For a list of participating institutions, see: Archival Resources integrates the portion of the Research Libraries Group's RLIN database containing descriptive records of archival collections with a growing number of online finding aids or detailed collection guides and inventories. If you know that you want to locate only manuscript and archival materials, we recommend that you search Archival Resources. In Archival Resources you are able to move from the catalog record to an existing online finding aid, if one is available. Archival Resources allows you to search across collection guides for any word or phrase found in them, even if these words or phrases are not part of the collection record. This will enhance your ability to find additional sources. From the advanced search screen try searching for collection records: keyword = Audubon Society View any record and note the place/s where these words appear. Now go back and search from the advanced search screen for collection guides: keyword anywhere = Audubon Society From within any collection guide you can go to all the places where these keywords appear. Note that not all of them will be describing material. Keywords may also appear in a biographical sketch or collection summary. Open any collection guide and note the place/s where these words appear. Searching Archival Resources may not be possible for everyone outside of Yale. You can also search the RLG Union Catalog via EUREKA. If you are not familiar with searching in Eureka, you may wish to refer to Yale's online search guide Since there are millions of records in RLIN, searching can be very slow, and Eureka tells you that a search will take a long time. It will ask you if you wish to cancel, proceed, or continue your search. Once you have a preliminary result, you can use the Limit feature to focus a search. By highlighting material type and then selecting archival and mixed collections, you can identify all collections in the database containing your search term. Similarly, by highlighting location code, you can limit a search to the holdings of a repository. Each institution has at least one library identifier, but some have a location code representing various divisions within the institution. Materials from Manuscripts and Archives, for instance, are tagged with either the code CTYV or CTYA. You can limit the search with one or several identifier codes at a time. |
