Rules of Use

Because most of the material housed in Manuscripts and Archives is original or rare, and often fragile, a number of rules govern their use. The observance of the rules are necessary for the long-term preservation of our unique holdings. Though you may need to change some of your research habits, we do not impose rules to keep you from using our collections.

For preservation, some collections have been microfilmed. Generally, you will be required to use the microfilm rather than the original paper. With the exception of a few cases, all of the microfilm titles can be transferred to the Sterling Memorial Library Microform Reading Room for use during evening and weekend hours when Manuscripts and Archives is closed.

Most textual materials can be either photocopied or photographed. This work is done by either our staff or an outside vendor for an established fee.
