1. Undetermined Topic:

I want to get a general idea of your manuscript and archival holdings because I have not yet selected a topic.

You can find summary descriptions of most collections in Orbis, but currently there is no way to access a complete list of all manuscript and archival holdings in MSSA. If you are willing to spend a great deal of time reviewing records in no useful order you can do a call number search in Orbis. Yale librarians use different types of call numbers to organize books and other materials by subject or shelf location. Manuscript and archival materials are assigned locally devised call numbers that begin with MS (for manuscript collections), YRG (for Yale archives record groups), or RU (for Yale archives record units).

These can be searched in Orbis by selecting Call Number and entering MS for manuscripts or successively YRG and RU for archival materials. The result is a "browse" list that might include call numbers for archival and other types of material. There is no way to limit a call number search further.

You can also search for MS, YRG, or RU as keywords. A search of each, which has been limited to Manuscripts and Archives (SML), yields listings that provide some overview of our holdings.
