6. A Yale Building:
I need to learn something about a Yale campus building.
General information about Yale buildings is available in Buildings and Grounds of Yale University, edited by Richard C. Carroll in 1979. This small book lists all Yale buildings to the time of its publication, including properties no longer standing or previously owned by the university. There is also a chronological list of buildings and facilities and an alphabetical list of architects. Additional sources are Reuben Holden's Yale: A Pictorial History and Patrick Pinnell's The Campus Guide: Yale University. Information about more recently constructed buildings can be found in the Yale Alumni Magazine and the Yale Bulletin and Calendar. For the latter title there is a cumulative index by subject. Building a University, 1919-1940, a five-part exhibit celebrating the architecture of Yale University is available online.
If you are interested specifically in Sterling Memorial Library, you can find a detailed narrative description with illustrations from the April 1931 issue of the Yale University Library Gazette.
Manuscripts and Archives houses many papers and records which contain material on Yale architects and buildings. Official University archival records also contain extensive information on Yale buildings. Depending upon the date of construction, architectural information may be found in the records of the university treasurers, presidents, and the Buildings and Grounds Department and its successors. YRG 46-A and YRG 46-B include an extensive array of visual images.

There is also a collection of drawings gathered together from numerous university
offices in Yale University architectural drawings...collection, YRG 46,
RU 1. This collection has approximately 11,000 design, preliminary, working,
shop, and "as built" architectural drawings reproduced (in 1980) as 35mm
negatives and individually indexed and mounted on cards for easy viewing
in the reading room. Drawings may be vague and conceptual in nature or
as specific as full scale details of faucet fixtures.
Similar drawings received after 1980 are available in their original format.
