Exhibit: How to Play: Instrumental Treatises, Instructors, and Self-Instructors from Six Centuries. Summer 2007. In conjunction with the American Musical Instrument Society's annual meeting at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments in June, the Music Library shows off some of its extensive collection of musical instrument treatises and self-tutors, ranging in time from Vincenzo Galilei's Fronimo of 1584 to Jusquin Turenne Des Pres' First Bass of 2005.

Facilities

The Irving S. Gilmore Music Library is located within Sterling Memorial Library; the entrance is on the first floor next to the Newspaper Room.  There are three levels:  the first floor houses the circulation desk, Recordings Collection, the reference office, and the Historical Sound Recordings/American Musical Theatre office; the mezzanine level houses the Reference Collection, Periodicals Collection, and Music Library office suite; and the basement level houses the circulating collection stacks.  Library room numbers are as follows:  ML1-4 are in the basement, ML100-115 are on the main level, ML101M-108M are on the mezzanine level.  A floor plan is available at the circulation desk.

Study facilities include reading tables and armchairs in the Reference Room on the mezzanine level; study carrels in the Periodicals Room on the mezzanine level and in the basement; the Harold E. Samuel Recordings Listening Area with 40 listening stations (with various combinations of CD players, cassette tape players, and turntables), two video stations, and a Clavinova on the main level; and a Rare Books Reading Room on the mezzanine level.

Teaching facilities include two seminar rooms on the main level and the Historical Sound Recordings Seminar Room in the basement.

Network connections for laptops are available in the Reference Room and at the carrels in the Periodicals Room and basement stacks; wireless service is also available throughout the library.  A cluster of six research workstations is located on the main level.  One workstation is available for readers with visual disabilities and also supports web pages in non-Roman script.

Exhibit areas are on the main level and the mezzanine.

Photocopiers are located on the first floor (between offices ML112 and ML115) and on the mezzanine beside the elevator.  The copiers only take copy cards which can be purchased in the nave of Sterling Memorial Library.

Academic Term: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am-9:00 pm; Friday 8:30 am-5:00 pm;
    Saturday 10:00 am.-5:00 pm; Sunday 1:00 pm-9:00 pm.
Summer Hours:  Monday-Wednesday & Friday 8:30 am-5:00 pm; Thursday 8:30 am-9:00 pm;
   Saturday - Sunday Closed.
Intersession and Break Hours:  Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm; Saturday-Sunday Closed.
The Music Library is usually closed on holidays and university recess days.
