Copyright Policy

The Music Library will reproduce manuscripts, scores, and photographs from the collection, in compliance with the fair use clause of United States copyright law. When requesting a reproduction, the patron must fill out and sign a permission form which verifies their understanding of this policy. Reproductions are to be used for research purposes only, and are not to be sold or deposited in another repository. The library’s sale of a reproduction does not grant authorization for publication or performance. It is the patron’s responsibility to obtain permission to publish from the copyright owner.

Copy Procedures and Timeline

As many of our materials are fragile, please note that reproductions will be supplied only when it does not endanger the condition of the item. Processing time generally runs 4-6 weeks. Items that require special handling may require further processing time.

Due to the volume of requests and staffing constraints, staff can spend no more than one hour assisting patrons at a distance in identifying materials to be reproduced. Patrons who submit reproduction requests requiring more than one hour of staff time are encouraged to hire a research assistant (please contact Special Collections staff for more information).
