Introduction: Tours and research workshops held in the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library are open to interested members of the Yale community. Each session lasts approximately one hour. Unless otherwise noted, participants should meet at the Circulation Desk in the Gilmore Music Library, in Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High Street.

Orientation Tours of the Gilmore Music Library

  • Scope of the music collections
  • Organization of the library and its collections
  • Procedures and policies for borrowing books and scores, listening to recordings, and studying archival or rare materials
  • Staff available to assist readers

Scheduled Sessions

  • Wednesday, September 5, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
  • Thursday, September 6, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Friday, September 7, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Searching Orbis for Music

Become an expert searcher on Orbis, the library's online catalog. The library's holdings include thousands of recordings and scores, and searches that retrieve manageable sets in smaller libraries often result in overwhelming lists. Don't settle for information overload! Learn how to find what you want quickly and easily.

  • Find books, scores, or recordings quickly and precisely
  • Reduce result sets of thousands of records to a few pertinent ones
  • Learn ways to refine searches or organize lengthy lists
  • Locate facsimile editions and original manuscripts or archival collections
  • Limit searches to particular languages, libraries, date ranges, or formats
Scheduled Sessions (immediately following the tours listed above)
  • Wednesday, September 6, 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, September 7, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday, September 8, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
