Near East Collection: Islamic Art & Architecture Exhibition

Islamic Art & Architecture Exhibition

poster

Islamic Art & Architecture

The Islamic house of worship, the mosque, retained its simplicity for few decades until the Arabs conquered those regions of the Middle East which were part of the Byzantine and Persian Empires. The splendor, opulence and magnificence of the art and architecture of these regions did not escape the sharp, artistic and discerning eye of the Arabs. When the Arabs settled in the newly conquered lands they found different kinds of buildings and works of art.

In this exhibition about Islamic art and architecture selected items from the holdings of Yale University Library are displayed. They are intended to give an idea about the magnificent art and architecture which were commissioned by the rulers of the Islamic Empire and to demonstrate the continuity and innovations in the civilizations of the Middle and Near East.

The items displayed feature varieties of structures and artworks: mosques & minarets; madrasahs “schools”; palaces & private homes; hospitals; hospices; castles & citadels; caravansaries; Sufi zawiyahs, khalwahs, tikiyahs and khaniqahs “religious centers”; tombs & mausoleums; sabils “public drinking water fountains”; public baths; covered bazaars; glass, ivory, silver gold, jewelry, brass and wood works; ceramics, textiles, embroideries and carpets; in addition to specimens and masterpieces of Arabic calligraphy written by the famous Arab and Muslim calligraphers from different places and times. On the other hand, these items are intended to show how the arts and architecture of the East found their ways into Europe through al-Andalus during the Arab rule in Spain from the beginning of the 8th to the end of the 15th centuries and during the era of the Crusades from the 11th to the 13th centuries. It is also worth mentioning that the art and architecture of the Italian city of Venice was very much affected by the Islamic art and architecture due to the strong economic and trade relations between it and the Middle East from the 9th to the 18th centuries.

Venice and the Islamic world, 828-1797 features a wide range of fascinating images and objects, including paintings and drawings by familiar Venetian artists such as Bellini, Carpaccio, and Tiepolo; beautiful Persian and Ottoman miniatures; and inlaid metalwork, ceramics, lacquerware, gilded and enameled glass, textiles and carpets made in the Serene Republic and the Mamluk, Ottoman, and Safavid Empires. Together these exquisite objects illuminate the ways Islamic art inspired Venetian artists, while also highlighting Venice’s own views toward its neighboring region. Fascinating essays by distinguished scholars and conservators offer new historical and technical insights into this unique artistic relationship between East and West”—P. [4] of cover.

“Islamic architecture appeared too late in history to invent the major constructional forms or decorative techniques. Yet it was not enslaved by the forms it borrowed. In keeping with its dynamic, it adopted, then adapted, and grew into a new creation. And when it matured, it had an impact on both East and West”—P. 9.
